STR Reports Canada Performance for Week Ending 5 June 2010

In year-over-year measurements, the industry’s occupancy increased 4.5 percent to 67.5 percent. Average daily rate fell 2.5 percent to CAD$128.11. Revenue per available room for the week dropped 1.8 percent to CAD$86.46.

The Canadian hotel industry reported mixed results in the three key performance measurements during the week of 30 May-5 June 2010, according to data from STR.

In year-over-year measurements, the industry's occupancy increased 4.5 percent to 67.5 percent. Average daily rate fell 2.5 percent to CAD$128.11. Revenue per available room for the week dropped 1.8 percent to CAD$86.46.

Among the provinces, Prince Edward Island reported the largest decreases in all three key metrics. The province's occupancy dropped 39.5 percent to 38.4 percent, ADR was down 10.0 percent to CAD$103.34, and RevPAR decreased 45.5 percent to CAD$39.73.

Quebec posted the largest occupancy increase, up 12.1 percent to 72.1 percent, followed by Ontario (+6.7 percent to 68.8 percent) and Manitoba (+4.7 percent to 74.1 percent). Two provinces, besides Prince Edward Island, reported occupancy decrease of more than 5 percent: Newfoundland (-6.3 percent to 80.6 percent) and Saskatchewan (-6.0 percent to 73.6 percent).

Manitoba experienced the largest ADR increase, rising 5.8 percent to CAD$116.06. Alberta fell 5.1 percent in ADR to CAD$134.70, followed by Quebec with a 3.6-percent decrease to CAD$139.30.

Manitoba posted the largest RevPAR increase, rising 10.8 percent to CAD$86.06, followed by Quebec with a 8.1-percent increase to CAD$100.43. Newfoundland dropped 8.5 percent to CAD$114.29, reporting the largest ADR decrease besides Prince Edward Island.
