What is the difference between “a tour guide” and “a guide”?

Have you ever wondered, whether there's any difference between these two words? The answer is “yes”, and by the way, a rather big one!

As a rule, a tour guide runs excursions and accompanies tours, usually within a certain route. He has a deep knowledge in a certain range, for example, in the Renaissance period, the African customs’ specificity, the biography of Hemingway or any other things. If the tourists start wandering away from the tour subject, the common reply you may hear is that: "It’s not a part of our tour topic". So, who is a guide then? A guide is a multi-skilled person, who must be erudite enough to know how to individually adapt his travel plan to his clients’ requests, considering the sudden change of their mood, opinion, weather and any other circumstances. The whole excursion’s flow depends on him: from the selection of souvenirs and the search of the restaurant to the travelers’ impressions and providing the first aid. So, if you’d like to turn your adventure into the special one at the same time doing it in your own individual way, you know who you are looking for!
