Orbitz Insider Index Reveals Top 10 Labor Day Destinations

Orbitz (www.orbitz.com) today released its annual 'Labor Day Weekend' edition of the Insider Index, highlighting the top 10 U.S. and International destinations where Americans will travel to enjoy the last long weekend of the 2010 summer travel season.

"Metropolitan destinations, close to home top travelers' lists as the most popular destinations this Labor Day," said Jeanenne Tornatore, Senior Travel Editor for Orbitz Worldwide.  "Although international hoteliers are still offering consumers significant reductions in nightly rates versus historic levels, stateside locales will benefit the most over the Labor Day weekend as travelers open their wallets to take advantage of deeply discounted hotel rates."

Noteworthy highlights from this year's Index:

  • Overall, the top 10 Labor Day hotspots booked on Orbitz are all U.S. destinations.
  • Las Vegas continues to prove it is the King of the long weekend getaway, topping the list as the number one Labor Day destination for three years straight.
  • At number one on the International list, Cancun is the traveler's choice; but Toronto, at number 8, provides the best value with an average daily hotel rate of $107 USD per night.
  • Those wanting take a vacation to bid a final farewell to Summer, but have limited funds, should set their sights on Denver, Orlando and Los Angeles, all offering average daily hotel rates under $100 per night.

CITIES A HOTBED OF HOLIDAY WEEKEND ACTIVITY

Beyond the obvious travel deals, what's the big draw to the metropolitan destinations over Labor Day weekend? Orbitz took a closer look at a few of the most popular spots to find some of the cool things these cities have to offer travelers.

Las Vegas

In a town known for its headlining acts, travelers to Sin City over the holiday weekend will find no shortage of stellar entertainment options. From the smooth sounds of David Gray and Ray Lamontagne on Friday night (9/3) at the Palms Casino Resort, to the irreverent comedic talent of Chelsea Handler at Caesars Palace on Saturday (9/4), it's no surprise why American visitors will travel across the country to visit Vegas. Other top acts this Labor Day weekend include Melissa Etheridge at the Palms on Saturday (9/4), The Doobie Brothers at the Las Vegas Hilton on Saturday (9/4) and Sunday (9/5), and Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Wednesday (9/1) through Sunday (9/5).

Chicago

Labor Day visitors to the historic and festive Windy City looking for ways to celebrate will also find abundant options. Music lovers can stroll through Grant Park to check out the 32nd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, while sports fans can venture north to the bustling neighborhood of Wrigleyville, where the Chicago Cubs will host the New York Mets at iconic Wrigley Field. Other local neighborhoods will also be hosting a number of festivals, including the North Coast Music Festival, the African Festival of Arts, and the Taste of Polonia, all running throughout the weekend.

Seattle

Seattle does Labor Day weekend in a pretty big way. There's Bumbershoot, a major music and arts festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. This huge 3-day event covers 74 acres and boasts 2,500 artists, dance lessons, parades and more. This year's major acts include Katy Perry, Sheryl Crow and De La Soul.  Visitors will also be able check out the 1 Reel Film Festival, presenting more than 100 U.S. and international short films as well as three feature films.
