STR Reports Canada Performance for Week Ending 19 June 2010

In year-over-year measurements, the Canadian hotel industry’s occupancy increased 8.9 percent to 72.5 percent. Average daily rate was up 2.5 percent to CAD$134.03. Revenue per available room for the week rose 11.5 percent to CAD$97.17.
The Canadian hotel industry reported increases in all three key performance measurements during the week of 13-19 June 2010, according to data released by STR.

In year-over-year measurements, the Canadian hotel industry’s occupancy increased 8.9 percent to 72.5 percent. Average daily rate was up 2.5 percent to CAD$134.03. Revenue per available room for the week rose 11.5 percent to CAD$97.17.

Manitoba hotels reported the largest increase in occupancy with an 18.6-percent increase to 87.8 percent. Other double-digit occupancy increases were recorded in Quebec (+14.2 percent to 77.4 percent) and Ontario (+12.6 percent to 74.0 percent). Hotels in two provinces recorded reduced year-over-year occupancy rates: New Brunswick (-4.4 percent to 58.4 percent) and Saskatchewan (-0.8 percent to 76.7 percent).

Quebec outdistanced the other provinces in ADR increases as its ADR rose 13.1 percent to CAD$154.47. Manitoba posted a 9.7-percent ADR increase to CAD$119.83, and Newfoundland hotels reported a 6.5 percent rise to CAD$150.03. Four provinces reported decreases in ADR, including Alberta (-6.0 percent to CAD$137.27) and New Brunswick (-5.0 percent to CAD$110.32).

Four provinces posted double-digit RevPAR increases: Manitoba (+30.2 percent to CAD$105.24); Quebec (+29.2 percent to CAD$119.58); Ontario (+13.6 percent to CAD$92.43); and British Columbia (+10.0 percent to CAD$103.87). On the other end of the spectrum, New Brunswick hotels reported a 9.1-percent decrease in RevPAR to CAD$64.47.
