Sunday Times - Out of the Ashes Comes a Different Attitude to Travel
Why havent we explored the alternatives to air travel seriously before? Luck, really. It certainly seems that the growth of the global aviation industry has taken place at a quiet time for Icelands many volcanoes.
I suspect the first legacy of the ash cloud is that we will take a fraction longer to decide whether to travel and how long we go for. I can absolutely see the point of flying out for a spacious two or three weeks’ holiday in the sun. But while Eyjafjallajokull goes on erupting, it makes you think slightly differently about a weekend getaway, especially if you’ve got a lot on in the next week.
You might say that volcanoes tend not to erupt that often and people will just take a chance on this not happening again. But will we? Will so many people take short breaks at Easter? Only time will tell. Friends with school kids who went to New Zealand are being offered a flight back on May 11.
Let’s face it, there’s lots about modern travel we might want to avoid: not least the time it takes to get over jet lag and the permanent cold that regular travellers have in winter. Ways of not flying are getting more sophisticated.
