STR Reports Canada Performance for Week Ending 24 April 2010
In year-over-year measurements, the industrys occupancy ended the week virtually flat with a 0.5- percent decrease to 61.4 percent. Average daily rate rose 1.2 percent to CAD$124.06. Revenue per available room for the week increased 0.8 percent to CAD$76.20.
The Canadian hotel industry reported mixed results in the three key performance measurements during the week of 18-24 April 2010, according to data from STR.
In year-over-year measurements, the industry’s occupancy ended the week virtually flat with a 0.5- percent decrease to 61.4 percent. Average daily rate rose 1.2 percent to CAD$124.06. Revenue per available room for the week increased 0.8 percent to CAD$76.20.
Newfoundland reported the largest increases in all three key performance metrics for the week. The province’s occupancy rose 25.3 percent to 75.2 percent, ADR was up 10.4 percent to CAD$123.52, and RevPAR jumped 38.3 percent to CAD$92.93.
Besides Newfoundland, three provinces posted occupancy increases: New Brunswick (+6.6 percent to 59.7 percent); Quebec (+4.9 percent to 60.3 percent); and Ontario (+3.3 percent to 63.1 percent). Manitoba experienced the largest occupancy decrease, falling 8.6 to 67.7 percent, followed by Alberta (-7.8 percent to 57.6 percent) and British Columbia (-7.5 percent to 58.3 percent).
Ontario ended the week with a 3.0-percent ADR increase to CAD$124.19. Four provinces reported ADR decreases for the week: New Brunswick (-3.0 percent to CAD107.54); Alberta (-2.3 percent to CAD$131.50); Nova Scotia (-1.2 percent to CAD112.57); and Quebec (-0.2 percent to CAD$125.79).
Ontario (+6.5 percent to CAD$78.40) was the only market, besides Newfoundland, to report a RevPAR increase of more than 5 percent. Alberta posted the largest RevPAR decrease, dropping 9.9 percent to CAD$75.78, followed by Manitoba (-6.9 percent to CAD$74.65) and British Columbia (-6.6 percent to CAD$72.54).
